Buyers in the sports sedan segment universally want a good driving experience, stylish and spacious cabin, as well as eye-catching, if not sporty design. Companies like BMW and Mercedes-Benz always knew how to deliver what buyers in this segment wanted, but more recently another company revealed itself as a front-runner – the Japanese Infiniti.

Their all-wheel-drive G35x model is based on the Nissan 350Z sports car (Infiniti is the luxurious division of Nissan), which is great news for everybody that's into a sporty driving experience. The Infiniti G35x also has attractive body lines that catch the eye and a well-appointed interior, that make it a strong contender in its class.

Infiniti G35 Performance

The first foray of the firm into the sports sedan category came only with one engine. Fortunately, Infiniti hasn't opted for a small four-cylinder unit, but for a pretty powerful 3.5-liter V6 with 306 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque. At the time, this was one of the most powerful engines in its class, and that shows in the performance department – 0-60 took only 5.4 seconds, despite the G35x being equipped with a heavy all-wheel-drive system. Fuel economy is somewhat abysmal – in a real-world scenario, the G35x manages around 20 mpg in highway driving.

Aimed at real driving enthusiasts, the G35x can be equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, but we wouldn't opt for that one. While the shifts are precise, the clutch is very heavy and catches very high, which can quickly get on your nerves. The five-speed automatic may sound boring on paper, but we think it's a better choice. It shifts smoothly and has a rev-matching feature for downshifts when using the manual-shifting feature. It almost feels like a sports car in this regard.

All that straight-line performance is joined by equally impressive driving characteristics. The G35x has a sure-footed handling and enough athleticism to satisfy even the pickiest drivers. The all-wheel-drive G35x has the added benefit of great traction on snow and slippery surfaces.

Exterior & Interior

On the outside, few will describe the G35x as not attractive. The Japanese sports sedan has elegant, yet sporty and crisp lines, that form a beautiful, voluptuous body almost everyone will admire. And the best thing is, Infiniti hasn't got over the top with a design as some other firms do. Thanks to that, the G35x has aged gracefully and looks great even years after it was first launched.

The interior is stylish as well, with elegant lines that lead to a big center console with a giant screen at the top. We also like the materials and the fit and finish, both of which are top notch. The controls are nicely laid out and pretty user-friendly, but some buttons are too small to be used while on the go. The center screen is also not easily legible in direct sunlight, while the steering wheel blocks some of the gauges.

Conclusion

Some ergonomic annoyances aside, the Infiniti G35x is a great choice for a sports sedan. It's fast enough for spirited driving, has an agile chassis, great grip thanks to the all-wheel-drive system and a nicely appointed interior that looks and feels good. Highly recommended for buyers in the midsize sports sedan category.
